Whispers of the Lake — Architectural Projection Mapping

Overview

A building that tells the lake's story.

ANDATA LAB produced this architectural projection mapping in Chapala, Jalisco, in 2025: a site-specific piece on a 33 × 8 m historic facade, rooted in local myth — the origins, legends and spirits that surround Lake Chapala.

Día de Muertos imagery, marigold paths and the pier known as Rinconcito de Amor set the tone: a nocturnal, ceremonial journey mapped precisely onto the facade for the community.

The concept

Rooted in Chapala's myth.

Concept art anchored the piece before production — the lake, the pier and the marigold-lined path of a Día de Muertos night.

Story sketch — remembrance at the cemetery, the emotional heart of the piece.
Poster concept — Música del Alma, a mariachi skeleton playing guitar
Poster study — “Música del Alma”, the folk-art tone for the show.
Pre-visualization

Studying the facade before a single lumen.

AI tools and motion tests explored how the brick facade could dissolve, liquefy and rebuild itself — and how neon wireframes could trace its architecture.

On-site projector calibration — wireframe outline aligned to the historic building at night
On-site wireframe test — the outline projected and aligned to the real building.
The facade builds itself, brick by brick.

Development

How it was built.

01

Concept & story

Researching the myths and spirits of Lake Chapala and shaping a nocturnal, Día de Muertos narrative for the facade.

02

Facade study & pre-viz

Using AI tools to test facade transformations — dissolving, liquefying and rebuilding the brickwork, plus neon wireframe passes.

03

Content production

Modelling and animating the mapped content in Blender and After Effects, matched to the real geometry of the building.

04

TouchDesigner playback & spatial audio

Driving playback and cues in TouchDesigner and pairing the visuals with spatial audio and interactive sound.

05

On-site calibration & show

High-lumen projectors warped precisely to the architecture, calibrated on site for a live show on the malecón.

Projection Mapping Production

Architectural projection mapping, end to end.

ANDATA LAB designs and produces site-specific projection mapping for architecture, cultural events, museums and brand experiences. Our process can include facade study, creative direction, 3D and motion content, real-time playback, spatial audio, projector warping, on-site calibration and show operation.

See projection mapping services for the full production offering, or fulldome and 360° content when the surface is a dome rather than a facade.

Questions

Planning an architectural mapping.

What does an architectural projection mapping production include?

Depending on the brief, a production can include facade study, creative direction, 3D and motion content, TouchDesigner playback, spatial audio, projector warping, on-site calibration and show operation — the same path used on Whispers of the Lake.

What information is needed to quote a facade?

Architecture and photos or drawings of the surface, location, intended dates, audience context, and whether the show needs spatial audio or interactivity. Exact projector counts and budgets are defined after a site study — we do not quote from a title alone.

Can ANDATA LAB produce projection mapping outside Mexico?

Yes. The studio is based in Mexico and works worldwide. We design and deliver on site when the project requires it.

Can projection mapping respond to music, sensors or audience movement?

Yes, when the brief calls for it. ANDATA builds real-time systems in TouchDesigner with sensors, motion tracking and show control — as in Biointerface and Museo Descubre. Whispers of the Lake was a calibrated playback show with spatial audio; interactive mapping is a separate production choice.

Have a facade or space that should come alive?

Tell us about the architecture, location, audience and intended dates. We can help define the creative concept, technical approach and production scope.
